About Pirelli

Pirelli is n tire and auto part manufacturer based in Italy. They are the fifth largest tire manufacturer in the world. Pirelli is a large sports sponsor and is the exclusive sponsor and supplier for the Formula One races and FIM World Superbike Championship. Pirelli was founded in 1872 by Giovanni Battista Pirelli.

Originally a rubber manufacturer, the company first produced tires for velocipedes (a type of bicycle) in 1890. By the early 1900s, Pirelli had become a major supplier of automobile tires. They patented a type of tread pattern meant for asphalt roads in 1914.

Pirelli is also a manufacturer of industrial strength cables, producing undersea cables, coaxial cables for television and phone use. Pirelli was the inventor of the first fiber optic cables in 1977. The first fiber optic telephone line was then installed in 1981. In 1986, Pirelli acquired Metzeler, a German tire company. They then went on to acquire Siemens Energy in nine countries in 1998.

Pirelli continues to expand in the tire, broadband and cable businesses. They have services in 160 countries, 19 factory sites and employ nearly 40,000 people. Revenue of Pirelli is around 6 billion euros yearly. Their headquarters are located in Milan. Their slogan is ‘Power is nothing without control’. The company sponsors various soccer teams and Formula One. They also produce the Pirelli Calendar, which contains the work of various famous and respected fashion photographers from around the world.
