Logos Quiz Level 4-13 Answers
Wi-Fi is a wireless networking system that allows computers to transmit and receive data using radio waves on certain frequencies. The technology was standardized by the IEEE, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, and the Wi-Fi logo is only allowed on products which have been certified as being compatible according to the IEEE standards. Wi-Fi technology is used by a wide variety of devices today, including laptop and desktop computers, printers, mobile smart phones, and wireless headsets. Many cities, including New York, offer city-wide Wi-Fi services in subways stations, parks, and public plazas. However, Wi-Fi connections are generally less secure than hard connections, and are often secured only by WEP keys, which have proved vulnerable to casual hackers. The practice of piggybacking, or “stealing someone’s Wi-Fi” has also become common, with unauthorized users using another person’s wi-fi signal without permission, slowing their connection. The current standard set by the IEEE for Wi-Fi compatibility and access is called 802.11, and applies to wireless routers, video game consoles, and other devices.
