Dolby Laboratories, Inc. is an audio technology company specializing in stereo and audio devices. The creator of the now-famous “Dolby Surround Sound experience,” Dolby Labs was created in the 1960s by Ray Dolby, and focused initially on noise reduction, specifically for recording studios where background noise was a major problem when recording music and voice tracks. The use of high and low-frequency sound management allowed the Dolby devices to filter out unwanted noise and resulted in much higher quality recordings. Dolby Labs then turned to film, where the use of noise reduction and precision sound management allowed filmmakers to record and edit audio footage much more easily. Dolby soon began producing speakers and stereo systems for theaters to build off its success in the film industry, and was widely adopted in a very short period of time by thousands of cinemas. Dolby home stereo systems became a symbol of status and wealth, as well as surpassing quality.
