Peugeot is a French brand of automobiles that has merged with Citroen to form Peugeot Citroen, one of the largest automobile manufacturers in France. Peugeot is distinguished by its long history and standard of quality, as well as its status as one of the few major auto manufacturers still owned and operated by the founding family, the Peugeots. The history of the company is partially a history of the family itself: in 1810, the Peugeot family converted its grain mill into a steel foundry to produce tools, dress loops, and other metal materials, then began producing automobiles in 1891, but showed their first steam-powered tricycle automobile at the 1889 World’s Fair. Despite the exposure, the tricycle was a commercial failure. Two years later, however, Peugeot produced the Type 3, one of the first series-produced cars in the world, as well as the first automobile to be driven in Italy. During World War II, the Peugeot family mainly manufactured shells, weapons, and ammunition for the war effort, but went back to producing cars immediately after the war. In fact, the first car produced after the war was the Peugeot 20, the first unibody model car. Since then, the Peugeot family has celebrated two hundred years and continues to make luxury cars popular in Europe.
