About EA Games
EA Games or Electronic Arts, Inc. is a developer and distributor of video games. Its headquarters are located in Redwood, California. EA was founded by Trip Hawkins in 1982. IN the 1980s and early 90s, EA published video games for home computers. Hawkins had previously worked for Apple and sourced many of his first employees from that company, even getting Steve Wozniak, the co-founder of Apple, to join the board of directors. One of EA Games’ most important innovations was to give much more credit to its developers. They were among the first to call developers artists. They also paid developers much more than many other companies, allowing them to attract more and better developers.
In 1990, EA began developing games for consoles, starting with Nintendo systems. This was a change from their previous process, in which they licensed their computer games to other publishers to be made for consoles. EA began creating its Madden, FIFA and other sports video games during this period. They were the first publisher to release new versions of these games each year. EA is also the developer of games like Mass Effect, Medal of Honor, Spore and Harry Potter and Star Wars titles.
In the early 2000s, EA began acquiring a reputation for being a difficult company to work with. A blog, EASpouse, accused the company of essentially requiring employees to work 100 hours weekly. A class action lawsuit was brought by employees for unpaid overtime, which resulted in a payment of $30 million dollars to game artists and programmers. Their advertising has also been criticized for its misogyny and ageism. In 2012 and 2013, The Consumerist called EA the Worst Company in America. EA is the only company to ‘win’ this honor two times.
