About Warner Brothers

Warner Brothers is an American entertainment and media company. It was founded in 1923 by four brothers, Albert, Harry, Jack and Sam Warner. The brothers were Jewish immigrants from Poland. The youngest of the brothers, Jack, was born in Canada, but the three elder brothers were born in Poland. The Warner Brothers began their business in movie theaters, not in the creation of film. Three of the brothers purchased a projector which they used to show films in mining towns. The brothers opened the Cascade, their first movie theater, in 1903. In 1904, the brothers began a distributing company for film which would start creating films by 1914. In 1918, Warner Brothers studio was opened on Sunset Boulevard. The studio became officially incorporated as Warner Brothers Pictures in 1923.

Warner Brothers’ earliest success was with Rin Tin Tin, a dog movie star. Warner Brothers continued to be known as one of the smaller studios through the 1920s. In 1927, they released The Jazz Singer, the first full-length movie with synchronized dialogue. This would usher in a new era of film as ‘talkies’ took over the market. One year later, Warner Brothers released Lights of New York, the first movie that contained dialogue throughout. Warner Brothers was also the first film company to release an all color film in 1929, On With the Show. For many years, Warner Brothers would primarily produce musicals until they lost their popularity. To regain money, Warner Brothers started making swashbuckler and gangster films in the 1930s. Many of these films became controversial as the Hays Code took full effect in 1934. Warner Brothers began creating cartoons in 1930 as well.

After many further shifts throughout the studio’s history, Warner Brothers is now one of the 5 main film creators. Warner Brothers has also created a television channel, merged with Time, Inc. and become immensely profitable. Harry Potter is one of the studio’s most profitable properties.
