About Maserati

Maserati is a luxury car line based in Modena, Italy. Maserati was founded in 1914 by four brothers, Alferi, Bindo, Ettore and Ernesto Maserati. The brothers were each making cars before the founding of Maserati. Despite the brothers serving in World War I, they continued making innovations in car and engine technology. The company began making cars in earnest in 1921, with the release of the Isotta Fraschini Special. The brothers sold their company to another Italian family, the Orsis, in 1937.
Maserati became one of the main racing cars during this time period, until an incident in 1957. A man racing in a Ferrari crashed, killing himself, his co-driver and ten spectators of the race. At this point, Maserati began to focus on gran turismo cars. These cars were meant for long-distance luxury driving, often at high speeds. Maserati has passed hands multiple times since the 1960s. It is currently owned by the Fiat Group, an English and Dutch company.
Maserati is considered one of the most important luxury lines for automobiles. It generally competes with Mercedes, BMW, Porsche and other luxury brands. Redesigning and rebranding has allowed Maserati to sell the most cars in North America in their history in 2014. They sold over 13,000 cars in the U.S. in this time period.
