Barclays is a British multinational banking company and financial services company that is located in London. They are a universal bank, which means that they operate in all levels of wealth management, mortgage lending and credit cards, investment banking, wholesale banking and retail banking. Barclay’s operates in over 50 different countries and has over 48 million customers. They are the seventh largest bank in the world. Barclays dates back to around 1690 when Thomas Gould and John Freame became goldsmith bankers and traders in London. Since Barclay’s has become one of the largest companies in the world, they have been consistently involved in various controversies. One of their worst involvements includes a hefty loan to President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe in order to sustain land reforms that would seize farmlands and force over 100,000 locals from their homes. Barclay spokesperson only had a vague response to these actions. Barclays was also accused of money laundering in 2009. Around the same time, The Guardian website leaked documents that showed SCM transactions that produced huge amounts of tax avoidance.
