About Opel
Opel is a German car manufacturer. Opel has been owned by the American company General Motors since 1929. In the U.S., Opel cars are sold as the Buick brand. Opel began as a sewing machine manufacturer. It was founded in 1862 by Adam Opel in Russelsheim, Germany. In 1886, Opel began selling bicycles alongside his sewing machines. The company became the leading manufacturer of both goods by the time of Opel’s death in 1895. Under Opel’s sons, the company began making and selling cars in 1899. Although these cars were initially unsuccessful, Opel became the most popular car manufacturer in Germany by 1914. Opel’s success in creating affordable and desirable cars made them an important factor in cars becoming reliable for and necessary to people of every class. The shift from luxury good to necessity was a huge change in car manufacturing.
The main Opel factory was destroyed during WWII. GM investors didn’t believe that the factory was worth rebuilding. However, Opel factory workers, many of whom had worked for the company their whole lives, took it upon themselves to rebuild the factory out of its rubble. The workers were right to do so, as the company today employs over 35,000 people across Europe. The company’s slogan is Wir leben Autos, which translates to “We live for cars”. This slogan is used worldwide.
