About Baidu
Baidu is a Chinese web service company. Baidu runs a search engine and an online encyclopedia that is similar to Wikipedia in some ways. Baidu was founded in 200 by Robin Li and Eric Xu. The name Baidu is inspired by a Chinese poem and represents a persistent search for ideality, appropriate for an internet search engine. Both founders of Baidu were born in China then went to school and worked in the U.S. before returning to China. Over half of search engine queries are run on Baidu, making it a Chinese equivalent of Google. Due to limited access of Wikipedia and Google in China, Baidu has a major stake in both of those markets. It is uncertain how much Baidu cooperates with the Chinese government’s requests for censorship. They have definitely cooperated to a certain point, as they do block works with pro-democracy slants from their queries.
Baidu runs their own advertising program, maps, anti-viral program, news, image, video and MP3 search and many other tools. They have an iOS app, a Personal Assistant app and a Brazilian version of their site. This wide range has allowed Baidu to capture much of the internet market in China and other areas, making them a large player in the web services game.
