About Chupa Chups
Chupa Chups is a Spanish candy and sweets company. It was founded in 1958 by Enric Bernat. Bernat was working for a jam company when he came up with the idea of lollipops after seeing a mother become upset with her child’s sticky hands. His investors would not back a lollipop factory, but Bernat persevered. He also thought of the idea of having his candy be available by the cash register instead of behind the counter, where a child could see and ask for it. These two innovations made Bernat’s sweet company a huge success. By 1963, Chupa Chups were being sold at over 300,000 outlets. The lollipops, sold for one peseta a piece, were hugely popular.
After the Franco reign ended in Spain, the company was able to go international. It is now a worldwide company, making 90% of its sales in foreign markets. In 1991, Enric Bernat passed control of the company to his son. In 2006, Chupa Chups was acquired by the Italian confectionary company, Perfetti Van Melle. Perfetti Van Melle is the third largest candy company in the world, employing over 17,000 people. The original Chupa Chups logo was designed by Salvador Dali. The lollipops are advertised today as a way to quit smoking.
