About Philips

Philips is a technology company in the Netherlands. It was founded in 1891 in Eindhoven. Frederik and Gerard Philips, father and son, were the founders of the company. It began as a factory that produced lamps and other products. This location is now a museum. Over time, the company began producing many more products, including radios and radio equipment, razors and generators. During World War II, the current directors and other members of the Philips family fled to the U.S. They managed to bring a fair amount of capital with them, and continue production through the U.S. One family member, Frits Philips, stayed in the Netherlands, where he was able to save the lives of nearly 400 Jewish people. He would later be imprisoned at a political internment camp for a period of time.

The base of the company was able to move back after the war ended. They had hidden much of the company’s research from the Nazis, allowing the company to have a solid restart to their business. They would begin selling TVs in 1949 and records in 1950. Philips was also responsible for the first boom box and home video recorder. Philips has been responsible for many innovations and inventions throughout the years.

Today, Philips is housed primarily in Amsterdam. They have operations in over 60 countries around the world and employ over 100,000 people.
