About Netflix

Netflix is a media streaming provider. Netflix is primarily based in the United states, although it also offers service in Canada, the UK, South America, and parts of Europe. Netflix has over 6 million subscribers around the world. Netflix was founded in 1997. The website was launched in August with 925 movies available. At this time, Netflix was a pay per rental model that sent DVDs through the mail. They made the switch to a monthly subscription in late 1999. Blockbuster had the opportunity to purchase Netflix in 2000 for $50 million which they passed on. By 2005, Netflix was shipping out one million DVDS daily.

Netflix started shifting towards online video in 2007 as DVD sales began to decline. They also began aiding in the creation of original films, although this was only a temporary venture. In 2010, Netflix began offering a online only subscription. In 2014, Netflix passed 50 million subscribers. In 2011, Netflix began original content creation. Its first original content premiered in February 2013, House of Cards starring Kevin Spacey. Shows like this, Orange is the New Black and Arrested Development have made Netflix a strong contender in their production of original content. House of Cards has been nominated for 22 Emmys and 7 Golden Globes; Orange is the New Black has been nominated for 12 Emmys and 3 Golden Globes.

Netflix has dominated most of its competition. Blockbuster went out of business in 2014. Although Hulu Plus, Amazon and Redbox still compete with Netflix, they occupy very different niches in the rental market.
