About CNN
CNN, or the Cable News Network, is a basic cable channel in the United States. It is a 24 hour news channel created in 1980 by Ted Turner. CNN broadcasts from New York City, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles and Atlanta. CNN started broadcasting on June 1st, 1980 at 5 PM Eastern Standard Time. The existence of a 24 hour news channel changed how news is reported in the United States. Live reporting of events has become normal. CNN relies heavily on live reporting and personalities to tell the news. Anderson Cooper, Wolf Blitzer and Mike Rowe are just a few of the big names associated with CNN.
CNN was the first channel to break the news of the September 11th attacks. They were also the first to declare the attacks a terrorist act. Within the United States, CNN is often criticized for a left-leaning slant, covering Democrats more positively than Republicans. Outside of the United States, CNN is slammed for its pro-US slant. Other countries, especially in the Middle East, believe that CNN purposefully shows a bias towards American viewpoints and military. Former CNN workers have confirmed this in certain cases. Amber Lyon, an investigative journalist who worked for CNN from 2010-2011, told other news service that CNN had asked her to report on happenings in the Middle East selectively to maintain the public’s bias against Iran and Syria.
