About American Eagle Outfitters

American Eagle Outfitters is a clothing and retail company based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The company was founded by Jerry and Mark Silverman in 1977. The first American Eagle store opened in Michigan. The first American Eagle stores focused on outdoor clothing, meant for hiking and camping. The founders ran another chain of stores at the time, Silvermans Menswear. By 1989, the Silvermans decided that American Eagle needed more of their attention, selling their other retail stores. At this time, The Gap approached the brothers about selling American Eagle to them. This deal did not go through.

The recession in the early 1990s initially made American Eagle less able to expand. However, with a switch in management in 1991 then a shift in focus in 1992, American Eagle became a competitor again. American Eagle began selling clothes with a more casual vibe, rather than an outdoorsy appeal. They also began focusing more heavily on the teen market. American Eagle began a targeted marketing campaign, becoming the costumer for Dawson’s Creek, Road Rules and multiple teen-targeted movies. In 2000, American Eagle sold over $1 billion of merchandise. In 2001, American Eagle opened its first Canadian store. American Eagle also owns the company aerie, a lingerie and dorm wear retailer. Today, American Eagle has 944 stores around the world, including countries like Israel, the Philippines and the United Kingdom.
