About The United Nations
The United Nations, or UN, was established on October 24, 1945, by the Allied Powers of World War II. It was created to replace the former League of Nations, which had proven over its two-decade lifespan to be totally ineffective. The UN was intended to be an international body of peacekeeping in order to prevent another world war. Over the course of the 20th century, the UN grew from 51 member states to 193.
After the UN took over from the League, it quickly fell into gridlock due to the Cold War. As the United States and USSR–two of the UN’s most powerful members–were constantly at odds, the UN was unable to intervene in many Cold War “skirmishes.” Instead, the UN’s first major action in 1947 was to establish the Israeli state and the separate Palestinian area for the region’s Arabic citizens. Although many have hailed the creation of Israel as a great leap forward for Jewish protection around the world, others have since criticized the UN for creating additional racial and religious conflict in the Middle East.
In the ensuing decades, the UN mediated conflicts around the world, especially in the Congo, Vietnam, Kashmir, and the Middle East. Most of its attempts to resolve armed conflicts failed, however, and the organization shifted its focus to promoting economic equality for people around the world. But after the Cold War ended, the UN returned to military affairs, stepping into the middle of wars in Sierra Leone, Syria, Darfur, and once more in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The UN is led by its Secretary-General, currently Ban Ki-Moon of South Korea.
