About Mountain Dew
Mountain Dew is a soda brand that is currently owned by PepsiCo. The original Mountain Dew was developed by Barney and Ally Hartman in 1940. At this point, sodas and soft drinks were offered regionally and the brothers could not find a soda to mix with their whiskey. They decided to develop their own and came up with Mountain Dew, a citrus flavored soda. Mountain Dew was slang for homemade whiskey at the time, which the brothers thought was an appropriate name for their whiskey mixer. The brothers then partnered with Charles Gordon, who produced and distributed the soda from his factory in Tennessee, the Tri-Cities Beverage Corporation. Mountain Dew was then purchased by the Tip Corporation who modified the flavor in 1961. Tip Corporation was then bought by PepsiCo, acquiring Mountain Dew in the process.
Early in its history, Mountain Dew focused on its roots as a southern beverage. Advertisements featured ‘Willy the Hillbilly’. After PepsiCo acquired Mountain Dew, they decided to focus on a younger market. Today, Mountain Dew is often associated with young men who play video games. Mountain Dew has released special edition flavors that are tie-ins with popular video games like World of Warcraft. Mountain Dew also has a deal with Taco Bell to offer them exclusive beverages. One of those flavors, Baja Blast, became so popular that it is now sold in stores. Mountain Dew accounts for nearly 7% of all soda sales and 80% of citrus soda sales.
