About Puma

Puma is a German clothing company with a focus on athletic and sportswear clothing. It was originally founded in 1924 by Adolf and Rudolf Dassler as the Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory. The brother split the company into two entities in 1948, creating Puma and Adidas. Both companies remain based in Herzogenaurach, Germany to this day. Before WWII, the Dassler Brother Shoe Factory was enjoying great success, selling as many as 200,000 pairs of shoes a year. During WWII, both brothers were members of the Nazi Party, although Rudolf was more invested in its success than Adolf. Rudolf’s belief that his brother told Americans he was a member of the SS led to the splitting of their businesses in 1948.

Like many other sportswear companies, Puma has achieved a great deal of its success by sponsoring various athletes. Puma has sponsored a number of footballers (soccer players). Infamously, Rudolf Dassler’s son, then owner of Puma, double-crossed Adolf Dassler’s son to acquire the famous soccer player, Pele, as a sponsor. The two had agreed that neither company would attempt to sign Pele. Armdin, the Puma owner, managed to get Pele to show off the fact that he was wearing Pumas at the 1970 FIFA World Cup. Puma and Adidas had been in talks to stop competition, but this act permanently closed those negotiations. Puma went public in 1986 and today sells its products in over 120 countries. In 2014, Puma announced that Rihanna was hired as the creative director of Puma and is responsible for their womenswear line.
