About Garmin
Garmin is a manufacturer and creator of navigational equipment. Garmin was founded in 1989 by Min Kao and Gary Burrell. The name Garmin is a portmanteau of Gary and Min. When Garmin was founded, their first GPS unit cost $2,500. The U.S. Army became Garmin’s first corporate client in 1991, giving them the ability to grow using the capital provided by the army. Its first GPS was targeted for Marine usage. Garmin then began creating handheld GPS units that were used heavily during the Gulf War. Later handheld units would become popular for hikers and backpackers. Garmin also creates products meant for aviation and personal training. Further, the company produces sonar fishfinders, some of which have GPS ability.
The first GPS meant for car use was introduced in 1998. The Garmin StreetPilot only displayed black and white and did not speak to its users. Four years later, Garmin’s StreetPilot III began using a color display and spoken navigation. Garmin has become one of the most successful navigation companies, with about $3 billion in yearly revenue. Garmin employs over 10,000 people. Founded in Kansas, headquarters of Garmin remain in Olathe, Kansas but also exist in Schaffhausen, Switzerland since 2010.
