About Lay’s
Lay’s is a potato chip brand. Lay’s is owned by PepsiCo and is included in the Frito-Lay group. Lay’s was founded in 1932 by Herman Lay. At this time, the company was simply a snack food location. In 1938, Lay purchased the Barrett Food Company, a potato chip manufacturer. Initially, Lay sold his potato chips across the southern U.S. out of his car. In 1944, Lay’s became the first snack manufacturer to have television commercials. Frito merged with Lay’s in 1961. This merger made the company the largest snack manufacturer in the United States. Since 1965, Frito-Lay has been a part of the PepsiCo corporation.
Lay’s chips are sold around the world, often under different names. For example, Lay’s are sold as Walkers in the United Kingdom. Flavors of the chips vary widely based on the area in which they are sold. Walkers flavors include a Prawn Cocktail. In much of Asia, ‘Magic Masala’ is one of the most popular flavors. Thailand Lay’s also include Squid and Spicy Chili Squid. Many Asian countries have a Seaweed variety. In the United States, only salted chips were available until the introduction of barbecue chips in 1958. There would not be more flavors until Sour Cream and Onion was introduced in the 1970s. Today, there is a wide variety of Lay’s flavor including Dill Pickle, Ranch and more. Lay’s also runs contests to create fan based flavors. The most recent ‘Do Us a Flavor’ contest resulted in Kettle Cooked Wasabi Ginger chips.
