About Hot Wheels
Hot Wheels is a toy car brand name. Hot Wheels is owned by Mattel. Hot Wheels are die-cast scale models of real cars. Many manufacturers have made agreements with Hot Wheels to allow them to make models of their cars. Until Mattel bought Tyco Toys, Matchbox was the main competitor of Hot Wheels. Hot Wheels focused on luxury or expensive vehicles while Matchbox tended to make models of city cars. The first line of Hot Wheels included a Corvette, T-Bird, Cougar and Volkswagen car. At this time, the models were customized and unique to the Hot Wheels line. These first models did not include door cuts.
From the very first line of models released by Hot Wheels, it became clear that the brand was going to be one of the most popular. Many other model companies were forced to reevaluate their practices to compete with Hot Wheels.
Although Hot Wheels are developed as children’s toys, there are many serious adult collectors of the models. According to Mattel estimates, collectors own about 1,500 models on average. The collecting craze is usually associated with the Treasure Hunt series that began in 1995. One Hot Wheels collector hosts a yearly collector convention and publishes a quarterly newsletter about Hot Wheels, both since 1986.
