About National Geographic

National Geographic Channel is a television channel owned by National Geographic Society. The National Geographic Society was founded in 1888 as a club for academics and patrons interested in investing in travel. Gardiner Greene Hubbard, a lawyer and philanthropist, became the group’s first president. The National Geographic magazine was first published in October 1888. The magazine is published monthly. National Geographic also publishes children’s magazines and classroom materials.

The National Geographic channel started as television specials and series broadcast on other channels. The series started in 1964 on CBS and moved to ABC, PBS and NBC before launching their own channel in 2001. The National Geographic Channel is owned by both National Geographic and Fox Cable Networks. At first, National Geographic shows were primarily about travel and famous scientists. Today, there are also many reality shows on the channel, including Doomsday Preppers and Wicked Tuna. About 74% of households with television have the National Geographic Channel available.

The National Geographic Society also sponsors research and travel programs, owns a museum in Washington, D.C. and is responsible for awarding the Hubbard Medal and the Alexander Graham Bell Medal. In the past, they have sponsored Robert Ballard’s exploration of the Titanic wreck, Jacques-Yves Cousteau’s work undersea, Jane Goodall’s chimpanzee research and more.
