About the WWF

WWF is an acronym for World Wide Fund for Nature. It is an international NGO founded in 1961. The WWF used to be known as the World Wildlife Fund, which it is still known as in the United States and Canada. Victor Stolan, Julian Huxley and Max Nicholson were the primary founders of WWF. The logo of WWF is based on a panda named Chi Chi who was in residence at the London Zoo at the time of WWF’s founding. WWF is one of the largest conservation organization in the world. It has over 5 million supporters and works in over 100 countries. Most of its funds are donated by individuals.

WWF focuses on the conservation of freshwater, ocean and forest ecosystems. There are also a variety of wildlife species for which the WWF works to ensure survival. These species range from critically endangered to being at healthy levels of population. The species that the WWF protects are those that are lynchpin species of their particular environment. This term means that without a specific species, the environment would change drastically. Species protected by the WWF include certain gorillas, the monarch butterfly, elephants, tuna and the arctic wolf. Some of the species are also chosen for their importance to humans, like tuna and salmon. WWF also attempts to reduce humanity’s ecological footprint by teaching and using environmentally responsible techniques.
