By 1930, Shell was the largest oil company in the world. Shell became the first company in the Netherlands to purchase a computer in 1952.
Shell has attempted to diversify its products into alternative energy products multiple times. Unfortunately, none of these attempts have been successful and Shell has sold off each of its ventures. Shell has been criticized for practices in Africa, including pollution and the curtailing of protests. Shell was sued for responsibility in a number of human rights violations in Nigeria. Although Shell did not accept liability, they were accused of collaboration in the execution of nine leaders of the Ogoni tribe. They did pay over $15 million as a legal settlement in the affair.
