Nestle is a global food and beverage company based in Switzerland. Nestle was created in 1905 with the merging of Farine Lactee Henri Nestle and the Anglo-Swiss Milk Company. In the late 1800s, these two companies were rivals. Nestle produced condensed milk and milk chocolate while Anglo-Swiss produced milk and baby foods that were milk based. Their merger in 1905 made them a large part of the milk-based market. Nestle grew dramatically during the two World Wars. Condensed milk and chocolate were popular products for being shipped to the war front. Condensed milk did not spoil, and chocolate was considered a special but cheap treat for soldiers. After WWII, Nestle began merging with other companies, primarily food-based. Their first acquire that diversified the company was L’Oreal in 1974.

Nestle has the largest revenues of any food company globally. It owns over 8,000 brands, including Cheerios, Nespresso, Perrier, Nesquik, Gerber and Toll House. Nestle has been accused of various human rights issues and controversies. Its business practices, especially in underdeveloped countries, have been questionable. Nestle buys cocoa beans from plantations and factories that use child slavery for labor. Although Nestle signed an agreement to end child trafficking, they continue to use plantations that almost certainly use and abuse child slaves. Nestle and other companies were sued for artificially inflating chocolate prices. Nestle also asked Ethiopia to repay a debt of $6 million dollars while the country was experiencing a severe famine. After intense criticism, Nestle backed down and promised to invest any money from the country back into Ethiopia. They have also faced criticism for their aggressive marketing of formula milk in developing countries.
