About Converse
Converse has been an active and popular shoe company since 1908. Originally founded in Massachusetts, Converse began as a winter shoe company for people of all ages. They began creating tennis shoes in 1915. In 1917, their famous and now ubiquitous All-Star basketball shoe was created. Chuck Taylor, a basketball player, became the spokesperson for the All-Star shoe. Eventually, Taylor’s signature was added to the star logo on the high top All-Star shoes. Today, Converse shoes are sometimes also called Chuck Taylors because of this patch. Converse became an American icon, associated with athleticism and clean-cut fashion. They were especially popular in this regard in the 1950s and 1960s.
Starting in the 1970s, Converse became much less popular. New sneaker companies like Adidas, Nike and Reebok outpaced the sales of Converse. Converse filed for bankruptcy in 2001 and was acquired by Nike in 2003. Today, Converse shoes are not associated with mainstream America. Instead, they are often worn by people trying to eschew typical choices. They have become popular among certain celebrities, like Kristen Stewart and many musicians. They tend to signal a certain amount of edginess and are often worn by punk musicians, like Avril Lavinge. As of 2012, Converse shoes are no longer worn in the NBA. Converse shoes tend to be more about aesthetics than athleticism or comfort today.
Converse has remained true to their Massachusetts roots throughout their history. In April 2015, the company will be moving into a new headquarter building in Boston. This move is part of an attempt to revitalize the North Station area in Boston, bringing new commerce and infrastructure to an often ignored area of the city.
