About Virgin Group
Virgin Group is a venture capital group founded by Nik Powell and Richard Branson. The beginning of the Virgin enterprise began in 1970 as a mail order record business. A physical record store opened in 1971, the first joint venture for Branson and Powell. Virgin Records began its recording enterprise in 1973 with the release of four albums, including the soundtrack for the Exorcist, Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells. Virgin Records’ real breakthrough was the signing of the Sex Pistols. Other record companies feared signing the band due to their controversial lyrics and politics. Despite the Sex Pistols’ controversy, or perhaps because of it, both the band and the label rocketed to fame. In 1981, Virgin added a video game group called Virgin Games. 1982 marked Branson’s purchase of Heaven, a gay nightclub that really created the trend of openly gay clubs. The first iteration of Virgin Airways began in 1984.
Virgin Group has continually created new subsidiaries. Today, Virgin Group owns a business focused on commercialized space exploration, a publishing venture, multiple hotel businesses, banks and more. Many of the original ventures, like Virgin Records, Virgin Games and Virgin Mobile have since been sold to other companies or shuttered. Branson has continued his focus on innovation and invention throughout his career.
