About John Deere
John Deere is a product and brand of Deere & Company. John Deere, the person, was a blacksmith, manufacturer and inventor. Deere invented the first successful steel plow in 1837. He initially only made one plow to sell to a neighbor, but the quality of this one plow meant that only four years later, Deere was making about 100 plows a year by himself. By 1855, Deere had a factory in Illinois and huge production, making thousands of plows a year. The slogan of Deere & Company is ‘Nothing Runs Like a Deere’ because John Deere insisted on the highest quality products. This insistence has carried through decades to make Deere & Company a highly regarded company worldwide.
Today, Deere & Company employs nearly 70,000 people and is a regular member of the list of Fortune 500 companies. They have expanded far beyond the original steel plows that John Deere made, manufacturing a large range of agricultural, construction, engine and forestry machines. Their most common product is their line of lawnmowers, which can be found in homes and businesses across the country. Deere & Company makes an effort to continue housing their manufacturing in North America. Over half of their employees are in the United States or Canada. Their headquarters are still in Moline, Illinois.
John Deere’s refinement of the steel plow changed the course of American history. Although other people had made steel plows before Deere, his was better and lasted longer than his competitors. The steel plow had a huge effect on ‘Manifest Destiny’. Without the enhanced capabilities of the steel plow, farming in the often rocky and infertile western region of the United States would have been difficult or even impossible. The steel plow allowed migrants to move further west into the country during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The company’s green and yellow logo has become ubiquitous to American culture.
