Logos Quiz Level 4-21 Answers
Answer: Bp
BP, also known as British Petroleum, is one of the largest oil companies in the world, as well as one of the most profitable companies in the world. It currently owns Amoco, Arco, and other smaller oil companies. BP started as the Anglo-Persian Oil Company, a venture funded by William D’Arcy and led by George Reynolds. D’Arcy had been advised by geologists and surveyors that the territory that now encompasses Iran held vast quantities of oil, and sent an expedition to conduct drilling operations to search for wells. After discovering oil in the early 1900s, the company became highly profitable. It was nationalized, however, following Iran’s attempt at independence from the British colonial authorities, and lost all of its assets until the United States and Britain organized a coup to install a more Western-friendly ruler and enhance the prominence of the Shah. This attempt was successful, and British Petroleum, newly renamed, continued its drilling. BP later expanded into the North Sea and other Middle East locations. BP was the chief culprit behind the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, which was one of the largest, most damaging, and costly oil spills of all time. BP is set to undergo a trial in early 2015 for criminal negligence, and is expected to be fined several billion dollars in damages.
