Gillette is a company that produces home goods and hygiene products. The company was founded by King C. Gilette early in the 1900s, and began with the production of safety razors, the designs of which were patented in 1908. According to the company, when he first proposed the blades in the year 1900, Gillette was told by residents of MIT that the type of blades he had outlined were impossible to produce due to their exceeding thinness and required strength. A year later, Gillette had overcome these obstacles and produced blades that would serve as the basis for his new disposable safety razor design. The first two-bladed Gillette razor was introduced in 1971, and the first twin-blade pivoting-head razor in 1977. Since then, Gillette has produced the Mach 3, a triple-bladed razor, and the Gilette Fusion ProGlide with FlexBall. During the late 50s and 60s, the Gillette company diversified and began incorporating other products under its control, and became on of the largest home goods producers in the United States. As of its merger with Procter & Gamble, the original Gilette company has been dissolved, though the brand lives on.
