Answer: Winston
Winston is a brand of cigarettes owned by RJ Reynolds and Co., which also produces Camel and Pall Mall cigarettes. Winston cigarettes were introduced in 1954 and became the most popular cigarette in the United States between 1966 and 1972. The jingle for King-sized filtered Winston cigarettes (and the accompanying slogan “Winston tastes good, like a cigarette should”) has been voted one of the most widely known and effective marketing efforts ever conducted, and even permeated television shows like “The Flintstones,” in which the characters were shown smoking the cigarettes. Despite the success of the slogan, it came under considerable ire because it was not grammatically correct, which caused Winston to respond to criticism with the slogan “What do you want, good grammar or good taste?” The Winston brand became the center of a controversy when it began marketing itself as “additive-free,” and was sued by the Federal government for false advertising. Following a trial, Winston was forced to add a disclaimer clarifying that the lack of additives did not mean the cigarettes were safer. Winston is now rated the sixth most popular cigarette in the US, alongside the Kool brand.
