British Broadcasting Corporation, also called BBC for short, is a United Kingdom based broadcasting network that is located in London. This is the world’s oldest national broadcasting company and also the largest broadcasting company in the world. There are over 20,000 people employed by BBC. They were established under the Royal Charter. They operate under an Agreement with the Secretary of State for Media, Culture and Sport. BBC’s first live broadcast was from the Marconi factory in 1920. It featured a famous Australian Soprano named Dame Nellie Melba. This event marked the turning point from radio to television. The officials thought this type of broadcasting would interfere with civil and military communications. It is now obvious that these officials were all completely wrong. Nevertheless, the General Post Office decided to ban all broadcasts. By 1922, the requests for broadcasts was so high that the General Post Office was forced to take down their initial ban. They decided to allow one broadcasting license to the BBC. It as a company to be financed by British Royalty. The BBC is still alive and well today, with a wide assortment of television shows and news programs for people of all different ages.
